Senator Murray represents the villages of West Barnstable, Marstons Mills, and a portion of Osterville in the Town of Barnstable, the largest town on Cape Cod in terms of both population and land area. Barnstable was first allegedly explored by Bartholomew Gosnold in 1602, and was one of the first towns to be settled in the United States in 1636 before being officially incorporated in 1639. Despite being a shipping hub in the 19th century, Barnstable quickly evolved into a premier tourist destination for elite Bostonians by the turn of the 20th century.
West Barnstable, Marstons Mills, and Osterville are primarily residential communities with abundant natural attractions and small, local businesses. While much of Barnstable is made up of small residential communities like the villages represented by Senator Murray, the village of Hyannis serves as the commercial center of Cape Cod, hosting the Barnstable Municipal Airport as well as famous, scenic harbors.
