The vibrant community of Pembroke, located 26 miles south of Boston in the South Shore region, has been an incorporated town since 1712. Before incorporation, Pembroke was part of the neighboring town of Duxbury. Like Kingston, though Pembroke has historically been an industrial town, today it primarily exists as a residential community for people commuting to the greater Boston area. Since 1930, Pembroke’s natural resources and convenient access to Boston has resulted in tremendous population growth, causing a small, rural town to grow into a bustling suburban community.
Pembroke also has a robust summer recreation economy, with people coming from all over the region to make use of their many beautiful ponds. The area’s water resources are home to celebrated herring that became so popular by 1741 that Pembroke had to put fishing regulations into place to prevent overfishing. The town holds an annual “Grande Olde Fish Fry” to celebrate its herring population.
