The Plymouth and Barnstable District is known for its incredible coastline and open space. It is part of what makes the Plymouth and Barnstable District unique, and Senator Murray has constantly advocated for the protection of the environment. From protecting the coastline from dumping and dredging, to ensuring that there are open spaces for the public to enjoy, Senator Murray has a true understanding of the direct relationship between the environment and quality of life, and has made it a priority to ensure that we balance conservation and growth.

Highlights of Senator Murray’s conservation and environmental efforts include:

  • Sponsoring legislation that would ban dredge dumping in Buzzards Bay, protecting the unique environment, plant and marine life and the economic importance of the Bay to Cape Cod.
  • Working on solutions to stem the erosion of our coastline through the Coastal Hazards Commission.
  • Fighting to impose stricter standards on oil takers that navigate Buzzards Bay in an effort to prevent future oil spills and hold companies responsible for any costs associated with the spills. Unfortunately, the majority of the new provisions were struck down in federal court.
  • Investing money in our state parks and beaches, which has lead to renovations at areas in the district such as Scusset Beach.
  • Working with the Executive Office of Environmental Affairs and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to designate the Plymouth, Kingston and Duxbury Bays as no discharge areas. This prevents boats from releasing sewerage into the 62 square mile area.
  • Protecting a 188- acre parcel of land around Brigs Pond in Plymouth by working with her colleagues and the Town of Plymouth to fulfill the requirements of the challenge grant.
