Murray announces Scholarship Opportunity for
College Bound Young Women

-11th Annual NFWL Essay Contest
“The Great Enfranchisement: Women’s Suffrage”-

(BOSTON, MA)- Senate President Therese Murray encouraged female students today to submit to the 11th annual nationwide Bill of Rights Essay Contest co-sponsored by The National Foundation for Women Legislators (NFWL) and the National Rifle Association (NRA) for college-bound high school females, class of 2008 or 2009. The seven contest winners will receive financial help in the form of a $3,000 college scholarship and an all-expense-paid trip to NWFL’s Annual Conference this November.

“This is an invaluable opportunity for young women across the Commonwealth,” said Senate President Murray. “It is a chance to establish relationships with leading female legislators, and the scholarships help relieve some of the burden of ever-increasing college tuitions.”

This year’s topic is “The Great Enfranchisement: Women’s Suffrage.” The Scholarship Committee is in search of a 400-600 word essay on how the enfranchisement of American women was achieved from the 1890s to 1920, and weighs four specific criteria in submissions: story-telling, inspirational value, comprehension of the U.S. Bill of Rights, and content of original insight.

The mission of the National Foundation for Women Legislators is to enable women lawmakers to be effective leaders by connecting women leaders of today with the leaders of tomorrow.

Additionally, applicants are required to gain sponsorship from a female state legislator. It is possible to be supported by a U.S. Congresswoman, applicants are required to have a woman state legislator as a co-sponsor. If you are interested in seeking sponsorship from Senate President Murray (D-Plymouth), please contact Jacqueline Horigan at 617-722-1500.
